According to recent reports, director Sam Raimi is currently in talks to helm Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for Marvel Studios following the departure of Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson. While Derrickson will certainly be missed, Raimi taking the reins would honestly be the best possible thing for the 2021 film, as it is a project that was practically tailor-made for him.
The buzz surrounding Multiverse of Madness suggests the Doctor Strange sequel will utilize horror elements, even if it won't be an outright horror film. What's more, the character of Doctor Strange is one that revels in the bizarre and the surreal, as evidenced by the psychedelic imagery in his many comic books and his first feature film. Fittingly, Sam Raimi is arguably the master of surrealist horror.

Finally, Army of Darkness shows Raimi can effectively keep the same character and plot while also taking yet another unexpected turn with how the story progresses. Raimi tackled a completely different genre with this film, but maintained the horror imagery fans of the series had come to know and love along with the action/comedy overtones. As Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige put it, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will not be outright horror, but will contain frightening elements. Remove Doctor Strange from the equation and he's basically describing Army of Darkness. Plus, once again, Multiverse of Madness will likely take Stephen Strange to various dimensions and realities. In other words, the range Raimi displayed in how he progressed the Evil Dead trilogy makes him a perfect choice to tell such a story.

Considering just how skilled Raimi is at crafting bizarre, scary worlds -- as evidenced by the original Evil Dead films -- he already seems like a great fit for the next Doctor Strange film. However, we really can't talk about his qualifications for helming the Marvel Studios sequel without also discussing his Spider-Man trilogy.

Raimi's love for Marvel Comics also allowed him to craft a Spider-Man film trilogy that, despite the faults of its final entry, still maintains a significant fanbase years later for its heartfelt stories, charming characters and exciting action sequences. And he did so when the visuals now commonly associated with the comic book films were still in their infancy.
Sam Raimi's contributions to both surrealist horror and superhero movies are undeniable, and he made those contributions with limited or otherwise outdated resources. Just imagine what he could do with Multiverse of Madness with a big Marvel Studios budget and the best visual effects people modern superhero cinema has to offer behind him. It's not an exaggeration to say we could have something truly special when the Doctor Strange sequel arrives next year.

Directed by Raimi and released in 2002, Sony's Spider-Man helped change the game as far as superhero cinema is concerned, and laid the groundwork for much of what we see on the big screen today. Two years later, Spider-Man 2 kept the momentum going, and is still considered by many fans to be Spidey's best live-action cinematic outing to date. The reason these films were so good when they first came out (and still remain incredibly charming years later) is the fact that they were obviously made with a lot of love.
